[edit] Discussion of Insufficiency fracture
- Insufficiency fractures occur when a normal stress fractures an abnormal bone.
- Some clinical entities that reduce elastic resistance of bone and thus predispose it to insufficiency fractures include
- Bone disease (osteogenesis imperfecta, Paget disease)
- Metabolic disorders (osteoporosis, hyperparathyroidism, rickets)
- Inflammatory conditions (osteomyelitis, rheumatoid arthritis)
- These fractures should be distinguished from a stress fracture, which is a fracture that occurs when excessive stress is applied to normal bone.
